If you’re contemplating cosmetic surgery, you’re likely concerned about the cost, and whether cosmetic surgery insurance will cover it or part of the costs, or whether you can qualify for insurance for having cosmetic surgery in the first place. However, cosmetic surgery is generally not covered by most health insurance companies’ policies, because it is “cosmetic” and elective in nature. For the most part, health insurance companies only pay for plastic surgery if it is not considered cosmetic surgery, and if it is reconstructive in nature, or related to a major health concern or medical condition.
For example, getting breast implants just to increase the size of your bust will generally not be covered by any health insurance company because it will just be considered cosmetic surgery and nothing else. However, if you elect to have breast reconstructive surgery after having cancerous breast tissue is removed, this is a different situation all together, and this will likely be covered—at least in part—by your insurance company, but it technically wouldn’t be considered cosmetic surgery insurance. If you require or would like to consider cosmetic surgery for a reconstructive, health, or medical purpose, find out exactly what type and degree of coverage is provided by your insurance company before you make your decision. Nevertheless, even if the procedure you’re interested in is purely cosmetic surgery, it doesn’t mean that you necessarily have to pay for the entire procedure right up front. If you do enough research and investigation, you may be able to actually find cosmetic surgery insurance coverage. There is often financing options available for non-covered surgical expenses.
