Plastic surgery has been in practice since 800 BC when physicians were trying to devise new ways of treating facial injuries and imperfections. But naturally at that time everything depended on the limited knowledge of these physicians and the limited resources they had. Medical science gradually started to gear up and it was in 19th century that a technological breakthrough occurred in the field of plastic surgery and newer ways were discovered to mold or ‘reconstruct’ certain body parts or facial features. Today, plastic surgery is a term that covers hundreds of procedures that help to improve appearance or correct an imperfection.

Plastic surgery can be divided into two broad categories: aesthetic or cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. The latter can be termed as ‘surgery’ in its true sense since it involves cutting, slicing, augmentation, and stitching, just like any other operation. Examples of this kind of surgery include cleft lip surgery, sex reassignment, contracture surgery and breast reconstruction surgery. Cosmetic surgery, on the other hand, is done to improve one or the other aspect of human body. Examples of this kind of surgery include breast augmentation, breast reduction, facial implants, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, liposuction, rhinoplasty, facelift, laser hair removal and hair transplantation etc. You can guess for yourself that chances of success are almost alike in both these types and they greatly depend on a person’s will-power and body resistance.

Reconstructive surgery sometimes becomes necessary and you cannot avoid it at any cost. However, considering a cosmetic surgery procedure entirely depends on your willingness and the degree to which you want to change your appearance. It also depends on how uncomfortable you are with your present look. Advancement in technology has greatly reduced the risks involved in cosmetic surgery and it is becoming a widely-adopted trend rather than a necessity.

Before you decide to go through one of these procedures it is strongly recommended that you do a little research of your own. Learn the procedure you are about to undergo in detail; ask your doctor a few questions so that your doubts could be removed and then make up your mind about having it done. Also try to avoid clinics that are way too inexpensive. It’s true that cosmetic surgery procedures have undergone a rapid reduction in cost in the recent years, but still quality of work and cleanliness should be your first preference instead of price. Take your friends’ or colleagues’ recommendations because these days more and more people are undergoing one or the other cosmetic surgery procedures.

The results of reconstructive surgery are in some cases not permanent and the doctors suggest that you keep giving them regular visits in order to determine the current state of previous surgery. They then decide whether you need another operation or not. Cosmetic surgery results are permanent in most cases. However, some cosmetic surgery procedures require more than one sitting to actually achieve the desirable results, for example laser hair removal. It usually requires 5 to 6 sittings and even if these prove to be ineffective then for the rest of the sittings the doctor will not charge you a fee.
